Blue-green algae can be found in just about any place. In fact, it leaves dark stains on about 80% of all houses across the United States. Fortunately, roofing manufacturer GAF has a solution: StainGuard Plus™ Shingles. In today’s post, local roofer Infinity Roofing Contractors shares a look at how StainGuard Plus Shingles can help keep your roof free from blue-green algae.
What Is Blue-Green Algae?
Algae is a type of bacteria that have plant-like qualities, including metabolizing sunlight (through photosynthesis) and moisture. Blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma) is an airborne species that thrives on open surfaces such as rooftops. It grows a dark outer “skin” that protects itself from solar heat and UV rays, which lets them survive even harsh outdoor conditions during the summer season.
The substance that makes up its “skin” is the same one that causes dark streaks on the roofing surface. While the streaks do not adversely affect the roof’s performance, they are difficult to remove, and can have a negative effect on your home’s curb appeal.
Typical Solutions for Getting Rid of Blue-Green Algae
In our years of experience, we at Infinity Roofing have seen homeowners try to get rid of blue-green algae. Some would use diluted bleach or some other chemical solution and wash the roof with it. Others utilize power washers, while others still would have zinc or copper strips installed at the roof ridge, where the vents are.
GAF StainGuard Plus Shingles
While the solutions described above are effective to some degree, they are not long-term solutions, and may either damage the roof or cause injury. This is where GAF StainGuard Plus Shingles come in. It features algae-fighting copper granules mixed in with asphalt shingle granules. It features a proprietary Time-Release technology, which releases copper particles slowly but steadily, which ensures continuous algae-free roofing for most of its life span.
While competing products utilize a similar copper or zinc-release technology, they run out halfway through the roof’s life, leaving it vulnerable to blue-green algae in its later years. With GAF StainGuard Plus Shingles, you can have the peace of mind knowing that you’ll have a good-looking roof well until it’s time to get a new one.
