Asphalt shingles remain one of the popular roofing material choices. Given their relatively low cost and ease of installation, it is no wonder why homeowners prefer them over other materials. But what are they made of?
Read on as Infinity Roofing Contractors, your local roofing company, discusses what asphalt shingles are made of and how each material helps with their overall performance.
It all starts with the base, which is either organic felt or fiberglass. The former is made of cellulose fibers gathered from the recycling of paper or wood. The latter is used to create thinner shingles with higher fire resistance. Either material undergoes different manufacturing processes before other ingredients are added to form the asphalt shingles.
Though they come from naturally occurring deposits, most of the asphalt used in making the shingles comes from the byproduct of refined crude oil. The chemical composition of the crude and the refinement process involved can affect the quality of the asphalt. Because of this, another ingredient is added to make the shingles stronger.
These act as a stabilizer for the shingles because asphalt alone does not give the whole roofing material its durability. Adding these can help the shingles become more resistant to cracking. Fly ash and finely ground limestone are two examples of fillers used for asphalt shingles.
